The response of among WSU Cougar football fans regarding Mike Leach’s hiring by Washington State University was
immediate. Within days of Mike Leach’s hiring by Washington State, the now-famous tradition of flying the Cougar flag on ESPN Gameday took place with an added dimension: A pirate emblem (in homage to pirate-loving Mike Leach), was seen flying in the background of an ESPN Gameday broadcast.

Los Angeles County Coroner’s office revealed that former all-pro football player turned actor and commercial pitchman Bubba Smith died of acute drug intoxication, along with a heart condition. The autopsy found that Smith, who died at the age of 66, on Aug. 3at his Baldwin Hills home, had phentermine, which is a weight-loss drug, in his system. Coroner’s officials said he also had heart disease and high-blood pressure.

The 66-year-old actor’s heart was abnormally large — nearly twice the weight of a normal heart — and some vessels were blocked as much as 75%, according to the report.

Charles Aaron Smith was born Feb. 28, 1945, in Orange, Texas, and grew up in Beaumont, where his mother was a teacher and his father his high school football coach.

At Michigan State, Smith became an All-American defensive end for the Spartans, who went 19-1-1 his last two seasons. He also earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology.

The 6-foot-7, 280-pound defensive end was the No. 1 NFL draft pick from Michigan State University when he joined the Baltimore Colts in 1967.He played five seasons for the Colts, which included their upset loss to the New York Jets in Super Bowl III and a victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl V.

He spent two seasons with the Oakland Raiders and two more with the Houston Oilers before a knee injury ended his career in 1976.

After football, Smith was recruited to appear in commercials for Miller Lite beer. He and fellow NFL veteran Dick Butkus were cast as inept golfers and polo players in the TV spots.

Judge Declares Mistrial in Clemons Case (original story from the New York Times)

The federal judge presiding over Roger Clemens’s perjury trial today declared a mistrial because the prosecution revealed information Thursday that he previously deemed inadmissible.

The part of the tape that worried him included comments made by Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, a Maryland Democrat, about the credibility of Andy Pettitte, Clemens’s former best friend and teammate, who is expected to be one of the star witnesses for the government.

Pettitte testified that Clemens had admitted to him that he used human growth hormone in 1999 or 2000.

The prosuction also played for the jury a part of the Congressional hearings in which Cummings read an affidavit from Andy Pettitte’s wife, Laura. In the affidavit, she said that her husband had told her about a conversation he had with Clemens about Clemens’s use of human growth hormone.

Walton ruled last week that Laura Pettitte’s testimony would be barred from the trial, unless it was needed for rebuttal evidence when Andy Pettitte was on the stand.
